Alonso’s Chelsea Win Seven-Goal Thriller Against Brighton While Sunderland Sink Struggling Fulham

Sunday’s Premier League action delivered a heavy dose of drama as Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea edged out Brighton in a breathless 4-3 thriller at Stamford Bridge, while Sunderland secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Alvaro Arbeloa’s winless Fulham at the Stadium of Light. At Stamford Bridge, Alonso’s tenure continued its perfect, albeit chaotic, start. The Blues came out of the gates flying, establishing a commanding three-goal lead in a scintillating opening 32 minutes. Romeo Lavia opened the scoring in the fourth minute, followed quickly by Pedro Neto. Former Brighton man Joao Pedro then added a third against his old club to seemingly put the game to bed early on. However, the Seagulls mounted a fierce comeback. Brighton pushed hard for an equalizer, forcing Martinez into some fine saves. Fortunately for the Blues, talisman Cole Palmer stepped up in the 74th minute, finding the bottom corner with a superb finish to restore a two-goal cushion. That strike proved vital, as Gross’s stoppage-time header for the visitors made for a nervy finish, though it was ultimately too little, too late. Beyond the scoreline, Alonso still has squad issues to navigate. While Chelsea’s new-look attack has secured back-to-back victories, their defense remains porous. Furthermore, Enzo Fernandez was notably excluded from the squad for a second consecutive match amidst intense transfer interest from Manchester City, and Moises Caicedo suffered an injury shortly after coming on for his first appearance of the season. Up north, it was a completely different style of football but an equally important three points for Sunderland, who bounced back from an opening-day defeat to beat Fulham 1-0. In a tightly contested affair with few clear-cut chances, Regis Le Bris’s second-half substitutions proved to be the deciding factor. The match’s defining moments belonged to substitute Wilson Isidor. In the 71st minute, Isidor remarkably hit the post with the goal at his mercy following a brilliant setup by Enzo Le Fee. However, the forward quickly redeemed himself just four minutes later. Fellow substitute Habib Diarra threaded a dangerous ball across the box, and after Fulham keeper Bernd Leno failed to intercept the cross, Isidor was perfectly positioned to tap into an empty net. Fulham enjoyed spells of bright play but ultimately lacked a cutting edge in the final third. Standout defensive efforts from Sunderland's Nordi Mukiele and Sam Roefs, combined with a midfield masterclass from Granit Xhaka, kept the Cottagers at bay. The result leaves Arbeloa's Fulham toothless and stranded with zero points from two outings, while Sunderland celebrate their first victory of the new campaign.
